Urge the U.S. Senate to Help Veterans & Shelter Dogs H.R. 198

A bill has unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives that would help both veterans and shelter dogs. H.R. 198, the Veterans Dog Training Therapy Act, was approved as part of a package of veterans’ health legislation (H.R. 2074). It would create a pilot program for training dogs as a form of therapy to help treat veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or other post-deployment mental health conditions. Once trained, the dogs would assist veterans with disabilities. This legislation is a win-win solution for two deserving groups by helping homeless dogs and supporting veterans. This bill will allow dogs waiting for adoption in animal shelters to be considered for this training program to assist veterans struggling to overcome disabilities. Now we need the U.S. Senate to approve this legislation!

Save a Life and Adopt a Purebred Dog

I spoke to a client this morning and the topic turned to their recent purchase of puppies from a breeder, which was the perfect opportunity for me to bring up shelter animals. This person was not aware they could have gotten a purebred dog at a shelter or from a rescue. So for anyone who may not have been aware of that, i hope you will consider this info when getting your next dog. You can get a purebred dog at a shelter or rescue. Those dogs are either strays or given up. People do give up purebreds, and purebreds do stray from home. Ask your shelter if they will call you when they get a particular breed. Our local shelter does this; it's called a wish list. It's a great way to save a life and get a purebred at a great rate!

Helping Shelter Animals Find Forever Homes

I have an undying passion for helping shelter animals, particularly dogs, find forever homes. All proceeds from my two online stores—Zazzle and Cafepress—go directly to Frederick County Animal Control, Maryland (the county's only shelter), for the purpose of helping animals get needed medical assistance as well as medical and other supplies and toys. The other goal is to raise awareness for shelter pets everywhere.

Two fabulous dogs, KC and Maggie, are senior labrador retriever mixes who came in to the shelter together after their owner died. It is so heart breaking that they have been at the shelter since May! A discount is offered for adopting two dogs at once as well as for adopting dogs at least 5 years of age. There are so many rewards with rescuing a shelter dog, especially an older one. Please consider opening your heart and home to a homeless pet today.

Danger of Dogs in Warm/Hot Cars

NEVER leave your pet in a car in the heat—even with windows down, which presents other hazards: your pet being stolen, escaping, or getting hurt trying to escape! What seems hot to you is hotter to your pet! A good rule of thumb is never leave your pet in the car if it is above 60 degrees outside. It does not take long for the temperature in the car to rise!

Call 911 if you see a dog in a car in warmer weather. If help does not arrive right away, here are steps you can take to rescue the pet in the meantime.
